The End of Zafaria

We defeated the bosses in Elephant Graveyard pretty handily (Rachel and I) and weren't really having much trouble at all. There were a few close battles where health got low, but those were more due to inopportune fizzles than anything.

We get the quest to go to Mirror Lake, which is accessed right from the Crossroads near where you start Zafaria. In we go. Right away, we find ourselves facing Tse Tse Snaketail. We load up a couple of storm shields and make short work of him and his death minion. He does have a rather high health total (7000) for a storm guy.

Next, we listen to Morganthe blather about this or that, then she summons four spectral guardians to fight us. This fight took a little while, and I wasn't familiar with the cheat mechanic. As far as cheat mechanics go, it was rather easy to deal with. I told rachel it would be a good idea to load up on treasure card blades for the fight, and then we started it up. What I initially assumed was that at any time the spectral guardian boss (Elephant Spectral Guardian) might catch you flat-footed without a blade and hit you with all the cheats (smokescreens and blizzards). What really happens is he randomly targets one player, puts a mark on them, and that player needs to drop a blade when marked. That player has to do it at their next opportunity. The other cheat he has is his super tower shield, which operates like every boss with a super tower shield. If you damage him, he interrupts and replaces it, and if he's the last creature up, he stops putting the shield up. Spells that remove shields without damage don't trigger the interrupt to replace them. So all we did is AOE damage spells until he was last guardian standing. The myth guy will cast earthquake and remove your blades and stuff! Just saying.

There were two more fights after this, each with four identical monsters. These guys didn't even cheat! The first group was 4 Goliath Bruisers (big bugs, ice, just under 8000 health each), and the second group was 4 Starburst Spiders (storm, around 6500 health). Easy! Right? This is where Rachel and I stumbled. Both groups hit hard and hit often. Figure on taking on average 500 damage every round from each of the Goliath Beetles. We each died and had to run back into the instance (luckily, not dying at the same time). Then the Starburst Spiders. There was a lot of dying. They score critical hits often, and one time we both died near same time and had to start the whole thing over. We took advantage of this, refilled our potions, threw in a couple more heals and shields and went again. It was ugly, but we limped through this. With a party of four and a dedicated healer, this wouldn't have been nearly so bad, but be warned! Lots of damage. Not quite sure how this might be soloed.

Katherine Light offered some words of advice here: http://www.wizard101central.com/forums/showthread.php?t=226370

She mentions picking up some resist gear and building your hits with multiple blades and traps before firing off. She also suggests that players save their attacks to go off on the same turn, so that one person doesn't become the target of all four monsters (which happened often between Rachel and I). Also, don't forget that these guys have stun cards (notably, Frost Giant and Storm Lord). Also of note, after these battles, lots of different kinds of treasure rewards :)

Pagoda Fun

I broke down and bought the Pagoda myself. I've ran it a couple of times now, and the mechanics are not that bad, but I'll tell ya, I'm not yet able to solo it myself. The most common schools you will face are Fire and Balance. There aren't that many fights, and if you google Midnight Sun Pagoda guide, you'll get a basic rundown on which fights are what.

I want to go over how I deal with the three cheat boss fights. And also mention that the grave marker puzzle is really easy. You can visually tell which grave is oldest to newest by just looking at them, the most ragged and worn is the oldest, so just keep looking for the worst damaged marker and clicking it, until you're left with the perfectly whole one. There's no time limit that I can tell, so no need to rush.

OK. The three cheat bosses.

The first cheat boss you meet is Kurogawa. His cheat is that if you damage him when you have no shield on you, he will get a free interrupt cast of vampire on you. And every other round or so, he will destroy a shield on someone. One guide mentioned that you can attack him without a shield on you, just not on the turn he removed it. Whatever. You got two options as the pyromancer. Do a lot of damage and not care that he is getting a free hit on you. Or do a lot more damage as a one-hit kill. If you're lower level, it might be better to coordinate with your group and kill single targets one at a time, saving Kurogawa for last. Then have one guy build up for a big hit, while everyone just shields as best they can, taking whatever damage opportunities they have while shielded.

EDIT: If you attack his minions without a shield, he still gets a free vampire. Oh boy! If you do AoE spells while shielded, this is the quickest way through.

The next boss is far more complicated, and can get seriously messy for the group. Yoshinobu is storm school. However, he and his crew have interrupt casts from all sorts of schools that don't match their own. Their interrupts are based on a very specific trigger - damaging Yoshinobu. As I've found out from other cheat bosses, there seem to be some exclusions to this rule that are a bit hard to figure out, but just generally, don't attack Yoshinobu until he is the last cow standing (he's a samoorai). OR! You can always do my favorite trick: one hit killing him. What makes that difficult is that they like to do a lot of shielding - legion shields and school shields. One suggestion was to do an earthquake on the group to remove the shields, but that of course will trigger his cheat mechanic. So what is the cheat mechanic? It is called "Chain Reaction", and it's effects vary upon the level of the encounter. I went in with a low level group, and his chain reaction was to cast a -60% smokescreen on everyone, followed by unicorn spell for his group. The higher level encounter was more ouch - same smokescreen, with a rebirth for his group, and a Power Nova.

To make matters worse, the entire fight starts with a free cast of mass infection by the enemies, and every couple of rounds a free cast of legion shields.

The final fight is with a guy named Kaizoku, a war pig. The fight starts with him putting up a very large tower shield (around 75% damage reduction, possibly higher for the higher level fights). Every other round (according to one Wizard 101 wiki entry), he removes all shields on your group and himself, and does a 150 point Star Attack. If you put a trap or negative charm on any enemy, Kaizoku interrupts and removes it for free. Every time he takes damage, he interrupts after the damage to put up another shield. Like Astraeus in Trial of the Spheres. This includes if he takes recurring damage over time effects, like from Poison or Fire Elf. If his shield is destroyed with spells like Pierce that do no damage to him, the shield stays off (until you hit him again with damage). He continues to do this until you kill his minions. When he's alone, he stops shielding himself, and then starts doing his star damage to your group every round. As a pyromancer, the downside to Kaizoku is... he's fire. You put a prism on? A prism is a trap and is dispelled for free. You can try for some off school damage, or you can just build up your most powerful hit and hit him as hard as you can (provided his minions are already gone or you've used a treasure card pierce on him first). Though casting traps and negative charms directly on him get dispelled, those from creature effects stay on. This is why efreet is nice. However, that your -90% attack debuff on him will be used up on his free star attack, so it's not as good as you might hope.

UPDATE: I noticed if someone has a shield on them, during his star attack he will attack that one, destroy their shields, but not use the star attack on others. This happened several times, but not sure if he does this every time.

I run through pagoda with my Deck of Devouring Flame set-up. It's got something like the following:
4 x Gargantuan
4 x Empowerment
4 x Fireblade
2 x Elemental Blade
4 x Meteor Strike
3 x Fire Dragon
2 x Rain of Fire
1 x Efreet
2 x Fairy
2 x Fire Prism
1 x Fireblade (item card)
1 x Fire Trap (item card)
5 x Wand Attack (120 ice damage)

My general play order (saying things go right):
Turn 1 Empowerment
Turn 2 Fire Blade
Turn 3 Gargantuan + Fire Dragon

Sometimes I get turn 1 Gargantuan + Meteor Strike.

Sometimes I get turn 3 or turn 4 Gargantuan + Rain of Fire with either one or two blades on it.

If I'm concentrating on taking out the boss, I'll discard through, putting three blades on myself, and pairing Gargantuan with either Fire Dragon or hopefully an Efreet. Make sure to dispell any shields before hitting if you can help it. Wand attacks or treasure card spells will do that for you, depending upon the boss.

Gardening: a Prelude

I've done a little bit of gardening, but not much. Currently, I'm trying to get to Legendary Artisan; and spending hours upon hours of running around trying to find the constantly-farmed stone blocks and sandstone nodes is taking away from my time to actually play the game.

So I googled 'wizard101 gardening tips'.

Here are my notes from my searching (some of which I already knew):

- with a castle you can plant straight in the ground, but you have to buy pots for your dorm (or indoors if some other housing). Purchasing housing for this reason is cost-effective in the long run if you're going to do serious gardening.

- higher level gardening spells allow for area effect casting. You can grow more things and tend them in clusters this way. Otherwise, you will use all your energy points up trying to cast individual spells.

- make your plots so that there is a center plant and four around it (at least at lower gardening levels). Make sure these plants like each other (best that they are the same kind of plant, so they grow at the same rate!).

- different plants harvest different items, so think about what you want from your plants (look below to see different types).

- don't plant more than you can care for, otherwise you're just wasting your seeds. Plan on your plants needing three or four different spells cast on them, and how much energy will be required for that.

- don't forget your plants. Advice offered is checking on them twice a day (morning, evening). Just like in real life, eh?

- if you have plants that don't like each other, make sure they are planted far enough away from each other.

- if you are training up pets, go light on your gardening (or wait entirely until you are done with your pet training). The energy points are used for both.

- consider what kinds of plants you want before going and purchasing. I'd first go through all the seeds you earned through play, regardless of what they give you. Then when you are stuck, look to get those seeds you are capable of growing and that meet your needs.

- finally, remember to exit the gardening menu if you want to interact with your plants to harvest them.

Short list of various plants and their uses:

Gold
Pink Dandelions - harvest black pearls (and sell them!)
Stinkweed

Cool Treasure Cards
Stinkweed - Poison, Smokescreen
Silver Trumpet Vine - Earthquake, Pierce, Disarm
Honey Sickle - blade cards

Pet Snacks
Cornbread Fruit Bush - golden wheat bread
Prickly Bear Cactus - sun fruit, crab apple

Crafting Reagents
Pink Dandelions - as noted above, black pearls, plus blood moss, lava lilies, springs, ancient scrolls
Prickly Bear Cactus - sunstones

EDIT: I'm reposting from a wiz101 forum member (lukin) who just consolidated all the purchasable seeds and what they give. Wow. Talk about comprehensive! (not sorted into the above categories).

Sothmokhet and the Efreet Spell

I was re-reading that post about the fight. This was before I had any spritely pet, and also at a time that I didn't use any treasure cards (though I gave advice for it). I never considered trying to use link and power link spells, along with reshuffle. I wish I had written out how my deck was constructed. I am going to try and do that for every fight that I blog about from here on out. I still stick by the use of snow shield as a strong measure against this guy (or at least glacial shield).

The Friendly Necromancer

When I first started googling things for Wizard 101, I stumbled onto the Friendly Necromancer. This site is whimsical, well-written, and covers pretty much everything. I had been meaning to add it to my useful links, so I just did.

His latest post is great, about running a character that is basically naked (starting wizard robes with no buffs, starting wand, starting deck). He's in Dragonspyre right now. What is hilarious is... how the heck does he do it? A diviner is a great choice to try it, because you will need to be able to put out enough damage, but with a starter deck, you only have so many blasts in you. You can build up for one enemy, but what if there are three? Does your tiny deck have the ability to keep up? Hmm. I guess you could do it if you learned reshuffle (or keep a supply of them as treasure cards). I guess you can do this, after all. But I'll tell ya, gear sure does help, doesn't it! Also, pets that spritely :P

So let's hear it for Angus, playing Wiz101 in nightmare mode! Now I want to try this :P
